National Buffer Zones Policy & Bill 2025 Progresses to Public Participation Stage

Stakeholders involved in the development of the National Buffer Zones Policy and Bill, 2025 last week convened in Machakos for a multi-agency workshop aimed at strengthening the draft framework. The workshop brought together policy and bill drafters drawn from the Corporation’s staff and key government institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, State Departments of Livestock and ASALs, the Ministry of Environment, Council of Governors, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), and other relevant agencies.

The purpose of the workshop was to incorporate amendments arising from the SWAG-II and Radisson Blue consultations into the draft National Buffer Zones Policy and Bill. These inputs are intended to enhance the policy’s responsiveness, inclusivity, and alignment with national development, environmental conservation, and sustainable land-use objectives.

During the engagement, CEO Dr. David Chepkwony met with the drafting team and commended them for their dedication and the progress made in refining the policy and legislative instruments. He noted that the collaborative approach adopted in the drafting process reflects the importance of buffer zones in balancing environmental protection with socio-economic development.

Following the successful workshop, the draft Policy and Bill will proceed to public participation forums across the country, allowing citizens and stakeholders to provide input and validate the proposed framework. This stage will precede formal ratification and adoption by relevant government agencies, paving the way for implementation.

The National Buffer Zones Policy and Bill, 2025 is expected to provide a clear regulatory and operational framework for the management of buffer zones, contributing to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and improved livelihoods nationwide.
