Since inception, the Corporation has established 5,235 hectares of forest cover in form of assorted tree species.
In the areas where the Corporation is operates, illegal logging has been greatly reduced and encroachment stopped. In fact, since the buffer was established, there has been tremendous regeneration and resurgence of some of the seasonal rivers in the conserved areas.
The Corporation has played a leading role in the preservation of biodiversity of Kenya’s highland forests that support key water towers to sustain the country’s agriculture-based rural economy. The tea zones have acted as ‘live’ fences against human intrusion, therefore reducing forest destruction.
To be more effective in achieving its overall mandate, the Corporation continues to employ new strategies in the conservation, protection and expansion of Kenya’s natural forest cover. This is expected to promote environmental conservation and economic prosperity for the local communities
In addition, the Corporation’s conservation efforts continue to hinge on the complementary roles played by various stakeholders with specific emphasis on community participation. In this regard, the Corporation will keep on working closely with local communities, donors, and other government agencies in the conservation sector to ensure the planting of new forests and expansion of the existing ones.
The NTZDC conservation goal will be continuously achieved by enhancing the consolidation of physical buffer zones along the gazetted forests through the establishment and management of indigenous trees and tea plantations, coupled with the integration of community support to the conservation efforts through livelihood support. Ultimately, the Corporation’s conservation efforts which have successfully stopped human encroachment into the gazetted forests and transformed rural livelihoods has greatly mitigated the negative impacts of deforestation on agriculture and the environment in Kenya such as soil erosion, food shortage and climate change.
In the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign to grow 15 billion trees, Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation has partnered with the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI) to propagate over 2 million tree seedlings annually earmarked for planting to protect riparian and ecologically fragile areas around the gazetted forests.
In addition, the Corporation supports the peri-communities in agroforestry practices in its afforestation programme. This entails partnership and sensitization of CBOs on forest conservation and support to the establishment of community tree nurseries for domestic energy needs and re-afforestation. As a result, the local communities are now growing tea and planting trees hence they can meet their subsistence needs while contributing towards forest conservation
