
Nyayo Tea Zones Corporation (PLC) is a Government Owned Enterprise under The National Treasury as now established through the GOE Act – No. 25 of 2025. Previously, the Corporation existed as Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation, established under the Legal Gazette Notice No. 30 of 2002 under the Ministry of Agriculture. The Corporation is mandated to create protective buffer zones of tea, assorted tree species and other suitable crops for conservation and protection of gazetted forests and other fragile ecosystems in Kenya and add value to the buffer zones value chains through processing, branding and selling of tea and other conservation products - thereby earning revenue for the Government of Kenya. The buffer zones also help delineate the forests and other fragile ecosystems’ boundaries and provide livelihood opportunities to the surrounding communities.

The Corporation was established by the Government of Kenya to enhance the conservation of forests and protection of the environment, to produce and market the internationally renowned Kenyan quality tea, to produce fuelwood that is essential in tea processing, to create jobs, support rural livelihoods, and earn revenue for the government.
Specifically, the Corporation is mandated to:
a) establish, manage and develop tea and fuel wood plantations and indigenous trees
b) establish and manage nurseries for propagation of tea and tree seedlings
c) establish, manage and maintain tea processing factories and process tea.
d) construct and maintain rural access roads, offices and green leaf collection centres
e) transport, lease, sell or market in Kenya or outside Kenya any tea, wood or other products produced or processed by the Corporation or its agents.

The Corporation implements Corporate Social Responsibility activities in the areas where it operates aimed at building sustainable corporate citizenship and address the welfare of the neighbouring communities in the zones and factory catchment areas who are crucial partners to the achievement of the environment conservation objective. The Corporation therefore implements a CSR Policy which has been aligned with the NTZDC 2020-2025 Strategic Plan with the following broad objectives: to improve and sustain relationships with key stakeholders including communities adjacent to the forests, consumers, and the public. to engage communities in wider social and environmental gains as a sensitive corporate citizen; and to increase awareness and involvement of the Corporation’s conservation efforts among its stakeholders.
To achieve these objectives, the Corporation supports Corporate Social Responsibility projects that include a bursary scheme for needy bright students around Kipchabo factory catchment, contribution to education activities such as prize-giving days and construction of facilities such as classrooms, improvement and maintenance of rural access roads, support to water and health projects and contributions/donations to select humanitarian causes, among others.
