In a strong show of environmental stewardship and community collaboration, staff from the NTZDC Gatitu Tea Factory yesterday joined hands with key stakeholders to plant 987 trees at Gatitu block. The initiative aimed at rehabilitating the riparian areas surrounding the factory, underscores the Corporation’s continuous commitment to sustainable land management and ecosystem protection.
A Multi-Stakeholder Effort for a Greener Future
The successful tree-planting exercise brought together a diverse group of partners, including:
- Rainforest Alliance team
- Kenya Forest Service (KFS)
- Local administration led by Assistant Chief, Kiamugumo
- Kirinyaga Zone staff
- Local community members
Their collective effort showcased the power of partnerships in advancing environmental conservation and strengthening community engagement in sustainable practices.
Restoring Riparian Zones for Long-Term Sustainability
Riparian areas play a vital role in maintaining water quality, preventing soil erosion, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining agricultural productivity. By rehabilitating these sensitive zones, NTZDC is not only enhancing the ecological health of the Gatitu area but also aligning with national efforts to restore degraded landscapes and improve climate resilience.
The 987 trees planted will form part of a growing green buffer that will help protect waterways, stabilize soils, and improve the overall environmental integrity around the factory.

A Testament to NTZDC’s Environmental Commitment
The Gatitu tree planting exercise reflects NTZDC’s broader mission of integrating conservation with tea production. Through regular afforestation and environmental protection activities across its zones and factories, the Corporation continues to support Kenya’s vision of expanding forest cover and fostering sustainable communities.
NTZDC extends heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders who participated in this meaningful initiative. Their dedication reinforces the shared responsibility of preserving natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations.
