In line with the Corporation’s mandate to establish, manage and maintain tea processing factories and process tea, Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation in 2010 constructed Kipchabo Tea Factory and Gatitu Tea factory in 2022 to process the Corporation’s tea in respective catchment zones.
These factories have improved the quality of tea produced by the Corporation and minimized losses of unprocessed green leaf during flush periods. NTZDC factories have also created several job opportunities both directly and indirectly which has positively influenced the livelihoods of the local people. The factories have also contributed to the development of infrastructure in their catchment areas.
Revenues generated from the factories are ploughed back to the buffer conservation venture and invested in uplifting the livelihoods of local communities from the catchment areas.Kipchabo and Gatitu tea factories have cemented the Corporation’s presence as a major player in the tea industry in Kenya and is in line with one of the key strategies of Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which includes increasing market access through value addition by processing, packaging and branding of agricultural produce.
