Buffer Zones are defined as physical protective areas created to enhance the conservation of a specific natural ecosystem - for example forests - to help maintain the natural environment keep ecological niches stable and functioning. In a forest environment, the buffer area adjoins the forests and water towers to conserve nature alongside compatible economic uses such as sustainable agriculture, forestry, recreation, or ecotourism.
Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation operates a 100-metre economic buffer zone which ensures a balanced and sustainable conserved environment and provides livelihood support to peri-forest communities forests in Kenya.
In achieving its mandate, the Corporation has established over 941 km of tea and tree buffer belts around 9 gazetted forest blocks across the country that act as continuous belts to curb human encroachment into the forests and support peri-forest communities’ livelihoods trough buffer maintenance.
The Corporation operates in 19 zones across the country which have formed protective buffer belts for nine (9) critical water tower forest blocks.
